McWilliams Wedding Cake

This is the first wedding cake I've done in a while that was not accompanied with cupcakes! Everyone lately has wanted cupcakes. I enjoy doing them but it was a nice change to do all cakes. For this particular wedding we did a three tier cake and then three additional sheet cakes. The three tiers were all decorated the same with ribbon around the base of the cake with little dots on both the top and the bottom of the ribbon. I put some artificial flowers in bunches around the cake and there you have it. Pretty easy :) I think it turned out nice.

9 Year Old Birthday Boy

These were for a little boy turning 9 years old! I hesitated on using that particular number 9 because it was exactly the same as the 6 in the set. I had several people ask if it was a 6 or a 9, but in the end I decided to use it because I liked the font and thought it went well with the circles. Chocolate cupcakes with buttercream frosting! Very simple and oh so yummy!!!

Flip Flops

I've spent the last week working on this particular project. It was a lot of fun but you can only imagine my relief that it is done :) It is fun making all of the little parts, but such a sense of accomplishment when you can finally put all of the pieces together and have it all turn out just how you wanted.

This set of cupcakes/cake was for a wedding reception. It was an outdoor reception in the middle of July in Central CA! Crazy!!! But it was what it was! At least the Bride & Groom went easy on the guests and said it's casual, "Shorts & Flip Flops required"! What a life saver! That was also my cue for the theme of the cake/cupcakes.

I had never actually made flip flops before but I wanted to learn! So I researched the internet extensively and found a few sites that were quite explanatory on how they had achieved their adorable flip flops. I had several mess-ups which my son gladly helped me dispose of, and then finally I got the technique down. I was able to master the technique because I had to make 200 pairs (that's 400 individual) flip flops for the cupcakes, plus a few extras for spares. It would certainly be a lot easier if I could find a cutter in that exact shape, but for now I am content with my technique and thought they turned out quite well. I also made 2 pairs of large flip flops for the cake which sat on top of the cupcake boxes. One for groom and one for the bride!

Some flip flops :)

More flip flops!

And yet more flip flops!

After I got all of the soles cut out I had to put on the straps. I used fondant icing to do the stripes and attached a little fondant dot as an embellishment. I tried to do enough colors and alternate them so there were not too many duplicates. I was quite pleased with my 2 days work involved :)

Lots of flip flops :)

By that point it was time to make the cake and cupcakes. We did chocolate, vanilla, and marble cupcakes all with buttercream frosting. I piped the frosting on to look like green grass and then put the flip flops on with a little royal icing flower. Overall, I was extremely pleased with the end result. Rarely do I get the opportunity to attend the event I am baking for, but I was invited to this reception so I was able to see all of the reactions. It was very fun to hear how much everyone liked the cupcakes. It was even better to see them bite into the cupcake and realize that it tasted good too! That is a hard combination to come by!!!

Some cupcakes!

Fondant Embossing

So the other day I was looking online for some baby shower ideas for cupcakes and I came across some embellishments made out of fondant. The lady said she "embossed" them. They were really cute little circles with words in the middle. So I've been searching for days trying to figure out what tool she was using to do this. I even tried messaging her to find out but she never replied back. Today, it just hit me that maybe a rubber stamp, like from stamping paper products, would work. So I went up to my much abused drawer of rubber stamps and found a baby one I had purchased and never used. I gave it a try and this is what I came up with. I think they turned out cute. One thing I learned though was that the more detailed the design on the stamp the better. If there is too much shading and flat spots it doesn't turn out as nice. So now I'm excited to give my new found technique a try :)

Brooklyn's 2nd Birthday

This is a cake I made for my niece's 2nd birthday! I can't believe she is 2 already!!! I wanted to make something really fun and bright for her and I found some really cute cakes with fondant Gerber Daisies. I don't think my flowers are actually Gerber Daisies but I think they are still cute the same.

I baked all of the cakes and cupcakes and made all of the fondant flowers the day before. I even got the cake covered in fondant.

That made for really quick work on the day of the party. All I had to do was put on the fence and attach the flowers with buttercream leaves. I had originally planned on doing the fence in fondant but amidst all of my craziness I forgot to make the fence when I was doing the fondant. So, alas, we have a buttercream fence. However, I think it actually helped in the long run because it was very easy to attach my fondant flowers to the buttercream fence. Here are some pictures of the final product.

4th of July Goodies

These are the yummy cupcake kabobs!!!

These are the cupcakes I did for Craig at work. There were kind of a last minute thing so they could have looked prettier but I guess they still taste the same.

Cake Pops in honor of my cousin Brice who is in the Air Force currently in Japan.

Fondant cupcakes for an order!!!

I made lots of fun goodies for the 4th of July. Here are a few pictures! I was very tired after I finished and my pool sure felt good!

Cupcake Kabobs

I found the cutest idea (thank you Bakerella)! I decided I wanted to try to make these for our 4th of July celebration!!! I was so excited! When I started making them, I realized it was definitely a learning experience :)

Here are the mini cupcakes. I learned to use cupcake wrappers on my cupcakes so that the outside doesn't turn brown.

Here are the marshmallows. I learned to make sure you buy sprinkles that pour out (not shake) and to have plenty of them :)

As I was making all of the separate parts yesterday I was beginning to wonder why I had thought I wanted to do it. Then as I put them all together today, I was so glad I had persevered yesterday. The putting together was very easy and they turned out so cute :)
